“Here I rest in Jesus as a child in its mother’s lap”

Elisa de Jesús Pereira, as Sister María do Monte was baptised, was born on the Island of Madeira in 1897, into the heart of a family of ten children. Her parents died when she was just 17 and, two years later, she expressed a desire to join a religious congregation but came up against strong objection from her family, as she had two younger siblings to care for. Ten years later, during a visit by the General Superior, Sister Verónica de Jesús Marturet, she asked to join the Congregation, which she finally entered in 1929 (1926?) and where she remained until her death in 1963.

Her life is an eloquent testimony to the fact that the charism of hospitality is a road of holiness. In the midst of her hard work serving the mentally ill, she maintained a deep intimacy with God, offering herself as a generous offering to the Father. “Here I rest in Jesus as a child in its mother’s lap”

On 4 March 2006, the Diocesan process for the Canonisation of God’s Servant María del Monte Pereira was opened in Funchal (Madeira).
